Whether you’re looking to store wheat to use in the near future or putting it away in preparation for an emergency, storing wheat is one of the best things you can do.
Wheat contains a wide variety of nutrients and can be utilized in multiple ways. In fact, wheat has sufficient food value to independently sustain life.
When wheat is stored the right way, it can last indefinitely without diminishing in nutritional value. At Lehi Roller Mills, our Hard Red Storage Wheat and our Hard White Storage Wheat in 45 lb. buckets are ready to store.
Keys for How to Store Wheat
– Store Wheat without Oxygen or Nitrogen Absorbers
– Keep Cool and Dry
– Store Wheat Directly in a Storage Bucket
– Prevent Condensation by Storing Wheat Off the Ground
– Store Wheat Below Room Temperature
– After Using Part of the Wheat, Secure the Lid Tightly to Preserve Remaining Wheat
Oxygen and Nitrogen Absorbers
Wheat is often stored with nitrogen or oxygen absorbers to prevent oxygen from reducing the life of the wheat. However, the oxygen absorbers also prevent germination of the wheat kernel rendering it useless as a seed. If wheat is stored correctly, oxygen absorbers aren’t necessary.
Keeping Your Wheat Cool and Dry
When storing wheat, keeping it cool and dry will prevent spoilage and infestation. A solid container, either plastic or metal, is preferable to bags for long-term storage.
Avoid placing wheat directly on a concrete or linoleum floor. Direct contact with the floor can cause condensation to accumulate on the bucket. This can be easily achieved by placing the storage container on a wood lathe, wood 2×4 or something that will allow air to circulate around the container.
We often hear wheat should be stored where its cool and dry, but how cool is cool enough? Room temperature or below is one suggestion. However, temperatures below 65 degrees will result in optimal storing conditions.
Using Stored Wheat
We receive questions from people asking if opening the wheat and using a portion will cause the rest to spoil faster. Because we thoroughly clean and seal our wheat in our long-term storage buckets, the buckets can be opened and a portion of the wheat can be used without reducing the shelf life of the rest of the wheat as long as the lid is closed tightly after each use. With our storage wheat, you can use it as needed and still keep your remaining wheat for storage.
